Natural History Collections Club

Are you interested in biology? Art? Education? Research? Museums?

If so, the Natural History Collections Club (NHCC) at UCSB might be the perfect fit for you!!

The NHCC provides members of the UCSB community with the opportunity to explore the world of natural history collections through hands-on curatorial work, special learning experiences, and outreach events designed to engage the community in learning more about the importance of these specimens as valuable historical records.

Examples of our projects and events:

  • Assisting with the curation of CCBER collections so that they can be used for research and education by university faculty, staff, and students, as well as by external researchers and educators.
  • Educating the general public about the importance of natural history collections by providing tours, preparing articles, attending school science nights, etc.
  • Workshops and talks on various subjects from experts in the field
  • Mentorship program
  • Designing new exhibits
  • Making videos or other media materials about CCBER collections

Are you interested in any of these projects? Do you have more ideas? Come join us! Our meetings are Monday at 6pm in the CCBER library.

And don't forget to check out our facebook page or contact the NHCC officers for more information.

This is a great opportunity for you to gain career experience working with natural history collections while benefitting UCSB by encouraging use and making the collections more accessible for research, teaching, and education!

Other Opportunities for Learning and Involvement

If you are interested in a career in natural history, you also might want to join the Emerging Professionals Group of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC).  Their blog showcases contributions from students who have worked in museums or with collections of many kinds.
